On the T.R.A.I.L. to Diabetes Prevention

On the T.R.A.I.L. to Diabetes Prevention

(Together Raising Awareness for Indian Life)

TRAIL is a national diabetes prevention program for Native American Youth that focuses on physical, educational, and nutritional activities that promote healthy lifestyles. This 12 chapter program is a partnership between Indian Health Services (IHS), the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI), Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA), FirstPic, Inc, and Nike, Inc. that has reached approximately 14,400 native youth between the ages of 7 & 11 in 86 tribal communities. A recent IHS grant funds the program in 55 Boys and Girls Clubs across the country which includes the Hill Top chapter, located at the Mesa Trailer Court.

One aspect of TRAIL is titled "My Healthy Community." The members of the Hill Top Boys and Girls Club reached out to San Juan Safe Communities Initiative and asked for help in producing a video that highlights a few things that they have learned from the TRAIL Program. The video, written by the Hill Top participants, also features them as they are involved in those healthy activities that they enjoy.
